Biography
Based in Washington, DC, Janet Riley is an expert communicator and leader with extensive experience in crisis planning and response, executive communications, media strategy and high-stakes media appearances, public speaking, message development, panel moderation and expert facilitation.
For nearly three decades, she led the meat industry’s response to high profile controversies, from the first case of BSE or ‘Mad Cow Disease,’ to food safety, nutrition and animal welfare controversies. She has been interviewed by major media outlets throughout North America.
In collaboration with animal welfare and autism expert Dr. Temple. Grandin, Janet helped change the meat industry’s approach to measuring and improving animal welfare through objective scoring. She is featured in the forthcoming documentary about Dr. Grandin, “The Open Door.”
For 28 years, Janet led communications, membership and professional development at the North American Meat Institute in Washington, DC. She also founded and served as President of the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council. She also spent nearly five years as vice president of communications and public affairs at Maple Leaf Foods, a publicly traded protein company in Toronto.
Earlier in her career, she worked for a major health care association representing the long term care industry and and a waste management association.
